Optimizing Nutrition in Cancer Care-Alleviating Nutrition-related Symptoms: Nausea and Vomiting-blend-to-mend
Cancer treatments may cause acute and chronic symptoms, which vary significantly from patient to patient. Proper nutrition intervention is based on individualized symptom support and management. In this article, we will propose a few strategies for patients experiencing:

(1) Nausea

Vary the texture of foods
  • Consume bland, soft, easy-to-digest foods instead of heavier meals.
  • Consume foods that are easy on the stomach - plain yogurt, clear broth, white toast, crackers, breadsticks, or toasts.
  • Choose foods that smell appealing, but avoid eating your favorite foods during distress. This may link them to the feeling of being sick.
    • Blend to Mend combats flavor or food fatigue by offering 9 different options. Adding ingredients to our base recipes can alter flavors to avoid this feeling.
Adjust eating habits
  • Sit up or recline with head raised for up to 1 hour following a meal.
  • Avoid rooms with cooking odors or overly warm.
  • Rinse your mouth after each meal.
  • Avoid strong foods or drink smells.
    • Our Blend to Mend Flavors were designed to avoid strong aromas or flavors, while providing a nutritious, yet delicious taste to your mouth.
  • Refrain from skipping meals; empty stomachs may worsen nausea.
  • Do not skip meals and snacks; for many people, having an empty stomach makes nausea worse.
  • Plan the best times for you to eat and drink.
Consult your physician
  • Keep a record of when you feel nausea and why.
  • Ask about the use of anti-nausea medications.
(2) Vomiting

Readjusting volume
  • Drink small amounts of clear liquids after vomiting stops.
  • Eat five-six meals a day instead of three larger meals.
Consult physician
  • Ask your physician about anti-emetic medication if vomiting persists.
