Optimizing Nutrition in Cancer Care-Alleviating Nutrition-related Symptoms: Taste Changes-blend-to-mend
Cancer treatments may cause acute and chronic symptoms, which vary significantly from patient to patient. Proper nutrition intervention is based on individualized symptom support and management. In this article, we will propose a few strategies for patients experiencing:

Taste Changes

Add new or unfamiliar flavors
  • Add spices or sauces to foods; consider marinating foods before cooking.
  • Try tart food and drinks.
    • Our Kiwi Lemongrass flavor is more tart than sweet.
    • We recommend squeezing half a lemon to any flavor if tartness is desired.
  • Try adding sweetness to meat, such as cranberry sauce, jelly, or applesauce.
  • Try new foods when you are feeling well; try your favorite foods if you’re not nauseous.
  • Explore vegetarian or Chinese cookbooks for non-meat, high-protein recipes.
Adjusting eating patterns
  • Try using plastic utensils, and do not drink directly from metal containers if foods taste metallic.
  • Chew food for longer if tastes are dull; increases surface area and time with foods.
  • Keep foods covered, use cups with lids, drink liquids from straws if smell is an issue.
  • Try sugar-free, lemon drops or squeezing fresh lime/lemon into foods when experiencing metallic or bitter taste.
